Review Detail
Guitar tutor pro, for the price, is definitely a worthwhile investment. The core of this offering revolves around the "Mastering Guitar" ebooks and audio files. It is well structured and with more than 300 exercises and 400 odd audio files, it will keep any beginner and even some intermediate players engaged and progressing steadily.
Highlights
- Open Basic and Advanced chords
- Barre chords
- Strumming and picking techniques
- Fundamental techniques (hammer-on, pull-off, vibrato, harmonics etc..)
- Understanding modes and Intervals
- Advanced rhythms
- Alternate tunings
2 additional ebooks, which serve as Guides to Reading Music Notation and also tuning and stringing are great sources of foundational knowledge - especially for complete beginners. Introducing Music notation tutorials in very commendable in any guitar course, as so many take the easy way out and just teach TAB.
There are 3 software packages which come with the course, 2 of which are fairly standard in this market, a metronome and a tuning guide. The third, Guitar Chords Pro, allows users to search for different variations of chord shapes and is very useful in opening up possibilities on the fretboard.
Guitar tutor pro does have 2 Achilles heels:
1. Lack of instructional videos
2. Lack of jam tracks with backing to play along to.
Both these areas take resources and capital to produce, and I suspect that Guitar Tutor Pro is not as large an enterprise as some of its competitors. Course author Ryan Cameron has still done a fine job, and one hopes that extra investment in Guitar Tutor Pro might result in videos and jam tracks in future versions. If so, you might see it seriously challenge some of the established players in this market.
Recommended for budget conscious beginners, who won't be bothered by lack of video instruction.
